If you're looking for inspiration for how to dress your newborn for your in-home photoshoot, then you've come to the right place! You'll find below my top tips for getting the most beautiful final images, which focus on you, your baby and the love and connection between you all.

Keep it simple and neutral

We want the final images to be about your family unit, and especially your new baby. The clothes you choose should be simple and neutral so as not to dominate the images.

A simple (clean) white vest always works well for baby, and that can be layered up with cosy, neutral knits and accessories (booties, hair bows etc) making it easy to change the look throughout our session. I don't tend to suggest lots of different outfit changes as that can make baby a bit grizzly, so it's best to pick one or maybe two looks and stick to those.

Some families like to have photos of baby in just their nappy, in which case I recommend a simple knitted nappy cover over the top, as that photographs much more pleasingly.

In all cases, we'll want to capture the little details like toes and hands, so we want to choose footless outfits.

Make sure baby is comfortable

Itchy, scratchy or tight outfits are a big no-no as baby will struggle to get comfortable and settle for the session. Try to stick to soft, natural fabrics, like cotton, wool or cashmere.

We also need to consider the season when selecting outfits - we certainly don't want baby to be cold so in mid-winter its best to layer up with knits rather than having baby in just a nappy/nappy cover, unless you've made sure that your house is lovely and cosy.
